Explore the jewel of Moreton Bay – North Stradbroke Island, or “Straddie” as its known locally.
Moreton Bay is home to the dugong and 5 of the 7 species of turtle. As well it boasts the largest dolphin population so close to any capital city!
Only a 20 min water taxi sprint takes you to Dunwich, on the inland side of Straddie. Here you can explore the historic sites or jump on the local bus to whisk you away to Pt Lookout.
Pt Lookout has a fabulous Gorge Walk. Here you can also see whales migrating from May to December or watch pods of dolphins playing in the surf break, as well as sting rays, turtles and sharks.
Enjoy a feed of local fish at the cafes, try snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Perhaps hire a ‘tinny’ (small boat) and try to hook a flathead (local fish).
Straddie Kingfisher Tours operate from the island and offer a 4 wheel drive full day excursion visiting the lakes, 90 mile beach before serving a BBQ on the beach. The return drive takes you through an area where you can regularly see koalas from the roadside.
Brisbane Yacht Charters also operates from the mainland and explores Moreton Bay and the islands – the sunset cruise is a delight.
